Report on IPCC - or more Grist hype?
Once again, Grist gives us half a report, I assume because it makes for better sarcasm. In addition to the nuclear power, genetically modified crops, and carbon burial that makes Grist "feel so much better," the BBC article referenced talks about "shifting to renewable forms of energy" and "making buildings more energy-efficient."
The Guardian story says the plan includes "energy efficiency and renewable energy from wind and wave farms, and more futuristic ideas for hydrogen car fleets and 'intelligent' buildings which can control energy use."
The blog at the Scotsman says "The report also sets out solutions, such as capturing and burying emissions from coal-fired power plants; a shift to renewable energies such as solar and wind power; more use of nuclear power and biofuels and more efficient lighting and insulation of buildings."
C'mon, Grist. You act like the little girl that runs to Mommy yelling, "Johnny broke the window!" but neglects to tell Mommy that she pushed him through it. Grow up. Either tell the whole story, or stop wasting our time.On One Fight In Bangkok posted 2 years, 6 months ago 2 Responses

Don't expect much, mountainlaurel
I have decided that the folks at Grist are not interested in information that does not support their position, regardless of what's true. They are proponents of a religion based on faith, not fact. I posted the same question you did, and amazingly enough, no one responded.
Here's part of my post, "Credibility requires balance," at the following link:
http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/3/19/172241/238The weekly Grist dated March 20th, which I just received, leads with a story that we have just weathered "the warmest winter in the Northern Hemisphere since record-keeping began in 1880." The Grist article further states that "El Niño helped make January the warmest January ever."
One of the links provided as a source, MSNBC, however, also states that "The season got off to a late start and spring-like temperatures covered most of the eastern half of the country in January, but cold conditions set in in February, which was the third coldest on record."
Why didn't Weekly Grist include this information? Because "third coldest February" doesn't support their position.
Furthermore, if the season started late, perhaps it's not over yet? Perhaps by April it will have all balanced itself out? The temperature tonight here in upstate New York is forecast to be 2 degrees F - 20 degrees BELOW the average low for today and only 3 degrees warmer than the record low. http://www.weather.com/weather/wxdetail//12068On Aren't You Glad You Use Dial? posted 2 years, 7 months ago 2 Responses

Backlash
"Other possibilities to push environmentalism" Cyberbrook, have you ever raised kids? Were you ever one yourself? A kid (as well as an adult) knows when a position is being "pushed" on them. If they are like 99% of other kids (or adults), they are going to rebel against the things that have been "pushed."
Give kids (and adults) credit for having brains. Give them the facts when they are old enough to understand. Let them draw their own conclusions, and then they will own it. If they aren't allowed to have their own "aha" moment, it will be just so much more rhetoric someone tried to cram down their throats.
Pushing just creates a backlash. On Can Al Gore's message be tailored for kids? posted 2 years, 7 months ago 16 Responses

Credibility requires balance
I agree with thebrowze. Incomplete, biased reporting hurts the cause of environmental concern far more than it helps. Such reporters lose their credibility and people stop listening -perhaps to that reporter, perhaps to ALL environmental reporters. Case in point:
The weekly Grist dated March 20th, which I just received, leads with a story that we have just weathered "the warmest winter in the Northern Hemisphere since record-keeping began in 1880." The Grist article further states that "El Niño helped make January the warmest January ever."

If I can't trust the information I get on Grist, than why would I bother visiting at all?
