State of the Climate Movement: Can fasting and asceticism save the world? 0
Posted 2 days, 19 hours agoDespite all the doubts surrounding Copenhagen’s political outcomes, global climate activists can take heart in the fact that the conference may result in the next best thing to a binding climate treaty: a smarter, more galvanized, and re-energized global grassroots climate movement.
More than a mere geographical convergence point for our movement, Copenhagen has already proved itself an important philosophical and sociological convergence point as well, inspiring climate activists around the globe to come together like never before behind powerful new ideas and campaigns. And I’m not just talking about 350.

Why the climate movement needs more Ethiopian-style activists 10
Posted 4 weeks agoOf all the amazing stories that emerged from last month’s historic International Day of Climate Action, the one that really caught Keith Harrington's eye was that of 15,000 Ethiopian students swarming though the streets of Addis Ababa brandishing 350 signs and whooping it up big time in support of bold global climate solutions.Olympic proportions
Oct 24, 2009 - Not just a global day of action; a historic turning point 6
Posted 1 month, 1 week agoIf you’re still looking for a good reason to venture out and take part in an International Day of Climate Action event on Saturday, try this on for size: the day of action won't simply be a landmark moment for the global climate movement; it could very well turn out to be a landmark moment in human history. And that's not an exaggeration.

Billhook, Agreed that the crowd should have been larger (and it would have been in the thousands if not for the rain) but I have to say that the kind of negativity you've expressed in just about every comment about this great day of action is exactly what our movement does not need in order to grow. Moreover I think you're really missing the point that this day of action wasn't about a march on Washington or a march on a single location. It was a global day of action - the first truly global day of action on any issue(as I wrote here on Grist the other day). If the goal of the 350 day of action had been a huge march on Washington there would have undoubtedly been tens of thousands with us in DC yesterday. But that wasn't what yesterday was about. As it happens, the DC rally and march was a locally organized event (and a really great locally organized event) whereas huge marches on DC are usually nationally organized affairs. The Big March on DC is coming, Billhook. We do have the power. As an organizer, I'm always open to any constructive ideas you may have on how to make it happen, or at least some thoughts on how to keep the rain away.
