    On Moonbats.

Not so long ago, I called Al Gore a Moonbat. I was reacting to criticism of the shaky science of his film. But considering my own peculiar standpoint - a long belief in human activities despoiling the Earth, not only the spectre of AGW - I had to wonder if it was not I who was the moonbat. By becoming too concerned about the myth of the 'hockeystick' was I not throwing out the baby along with the bathwater.
Were it not for my conviction that Nature is a better indicator of warming than a million climate models, I might still be  of that tribe.
But I have been too long in the very camp that hails Gore's vision as something to go for that I cannot do otherwise than applaud his speech.
If the science is dubious, so what - I'm a pragmatist and will ride his wave.
Were he to eventually stand for President and win,
I am sure the world would heave a sigh of relief. On Gore calls for carbon freeze in major speech on climate solutions posted 2 years, 11 months ago 6 Responses

    Disconnect.

Over in Britain a report was commisioned on GW, the Stern Report, by Chancellor Gordon Browne - much hysteria ensued. What has Browne done about it? put £5 extra tax on an airline seat!
There is, of course, talk of carbon credits. Ordinary folk over there have enough trouble getting their tax credits let alone some looney addition thst they cannot fully comprehend. Extra VAT that can be tracked for accountability would be better - though it is all another layer of bureaucracy.
You would think that with the Thames outside their windows that Brit politicians would be more focused.Yet they can't even focus on Trident and the hypocracy of those in power.
Incidentally the word is that Browne has frozen out Stern who is returning to academe; he will be
concerned with India henceforth - wonder if fears
of famine on that packed subcontinent will focus his mind.

Turn Your Face to the Sun.

You are so right, or at least my first instinct is to agree that the arguing gets us nowhere - but I am also disturbed when you say 'solving AGW' because I suddenly see the fault in my own standpoint.
To spend huge efforts in the ludicrous excercise of carbon trading in an effort to cure AGW is to take the eye off the ball. It doesn't require ernest discussion of global temperatures to know
things are warming nor idiotic remarks about summer and winter... it's happening, mate and it is just as likely to be the sun.
Its impossible to get concensus about climate models simply because we don't know enough so it is no good waiting until they agree.
We are still like children gaping at wonders we don't understand.
But we can understand drought threatens people and when villages sink through the permafrost.
What more do we need to start pushing for the so-called lawmakers to get their fingers out.

    The Sceptical Sceptic.

I strongly differ from the AGW sceptic in that I believe climate is warming - I have to because thenatural world is reacting to it; it just cannot be ignored.
My attitude may be atypical because I want an end to GHG emissions - it would give us cleaner world and an end to wars fought for oil.I want the polies to take sea rise seriously and stop adventures in Iraq, etc. Trident, forsooth!
The plight of people in drought-ridden parts is going to have to be dealt with and the cause of their misfortune is irrelevant. The battle between
RealClimate and Cimate Audit is absorbing but does nothing for the dispossessed.
