    Takedown

    Nature 449, 143-144 (13 September 2007) | doi:10.1038/449143a; Published online 12 September 2007

"Unfortunately, Lomborg's thesis is built on a deep misconception of Earth's system and of economics when applied to that system. The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is now 380 p.p.m., a figure that ice cores in Antarctica have revealed to be in excess of the maximum reached during the past 600,000 years. If there is one truth about Earth we all should know, it's that the system is driven by interlocking, nonlinear processes running at different speeds. The transition to Lomborg's recommended concentration of 560 p.p.m. would involve crossing an unknown number of tipping points (or separatrices) in the global climate system. We have no data on the consequences if Earth were to cross those tipping points. They could be good, or they could be disastrous. Even if we did have data, they would probably be of little value because nature's processes are irreversible. One implication of the Earth system's deep nonlinearities is that estimates of climatic parameters based on observations from the recent past are unreliable for making forecasts about the state of the world at CO2 concentrations of 560 p.p.m. or higher. Moreover, the nonlinearities mean that doing more of a bad deal (Kyoto) may well be very good." On Debating Bjorn Lomborg on global warming posted 2 years, 2 months ago 13 Responses

    Wal-Mart's Greenwashing Doesn't Fool Anyone

..and isn't likely to "peel away" any eco-activists. Even if they do adopt the announced policies, they still promote excessive unnecessary consumption that makes eco-conscious people ill. I think your premise is flawed. On Divide and conquer? posted 4 years ago 2 Responses

Why doe sPete Seeger come to mind..???

Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of tickytacky
Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same
There's a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses all went to the university
Where they were put in boxes and they came out all the same,
And there's doctors and there's lawyers, and business executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course and drink their martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp and then to the university
Where they are put in boxes and they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

    Great Lakes Salvage

A related story is the salvage from Lake Superior of lost/discarded lumber from the 19th century rape of the northwoods. There are 10,000's of trees sitting on the bottom in perfect condition and the lumber is highly valued for its fine grain. Apparently, the trees grew much slower in the virgin forests and the grain is much tighter. There is a nice cottage industry in Northern WI crafting musical instruments and furniture. On Timber industry turns to underwater crop posted 4 years, 3 months ago 3 Responses
