  Rachel - I totally agree with your comments.  Obviously, reducing waste can save precious resources and seems to me the EASIEST way to battle climate change and environmental degradation.  I have wondered how the complex concept of a "carbon footprint" has gained some currency, while the far less abstract concept of the "garbage footprint" is nowhere disucssed.  You explained that to me...reducing consumption is not a capitalistic endeavor! No one gains when we consume less...(well, only the economically powerless earth!)

  Is the problem the Obama administration's weakness on this issue or has the industry taken the lead with its promises of "clean coal"?

  On some level, Americans may be opting for any energy that is "ours" versus importing energy from petrodictators (i.e. "not us").

  We need Jimmy Carter's moral leadership - but we also need a national energy policy.
