As a reporter at a small newspaper in Vermont, I have spoken to small dairy farmers — and I assure you, they are struggling. It's a complicated problem, and even farmers selling raw milk directly to consumers and organic farmers selling to smaller coops are having a hard time. Organic farmers are worried that demand for their pricier product will fall, now that consumers are pinching their pennies, and coops that buy organic milk aren't taking on many new farms.
Milk pricing, as another commenter noted, is incredibly complicated. But a few months back I did an extended look at how the economy, milk pricing, and other problems are hurting Vermont dairy farmers — and what they're doing to get by.
