I'm not an expert on federal ag policy, but you can look at this one of two ways: 1) the Obama administration is just putting on a show, drop in the bucket support for sustainable ag to appease its liberal base or 2) they know what they are up against with Big Ag and are trying to first build a case for real reform by showing that there is real demand and interest, i.e. trying to build more public interest and demand by gradually supporting reforms that are hard to oppose: supporting farmer's markets, more local foods in the schools, etc. In either case I think it's worth letting them kinow what we really want/ need.On Quick thoughts on the USDA's 'Know Your Farmer' program posted 2 months, 1 week ago 14 ResponsesClick here to view comment in original post
Love the White House Garden and the new Farmer's Market. Now can we please overhaul agricultural subsidies so we support the stuff that is good for us instead of the junk (corn syrup, etc.) that makes us obese and sick? Michael Pollan's right that healthier agricultural policies would make healthcare reform much more affordable. Food for thought. And if you read the memo you see there's about $1 billion of federal stimulus money still available for local nonprofits or government agencies to expand local farmer's markets, launch an added-value program, build a community kitchen, create a farm expansion and distribution system to feed the school lunch program (be still my heart). Check it out. it's for real.
And all this comes a week after Obama, and the Ag and Education Secretaries, seriously dissed the school lunch program for being too full of junk food that comes from far away, saying we need more nutritous local food. They are definitely sending signals, and bucks, to reform the school lunch program and communities need to start gearing up for that with local farmers.

April,
Thanks again for this awesome way to slow roast tomatoes. I thought I would end up freezing mine, but they are so delicious that I'll probably eat my way through them in no time. Tonight we're having "potluck pizza" with slow roasted heirloom tomatoes from the farmer's market, squash from my CSA box, lefover grilled shrimp, basil from my garden, and cheese. Yum.

April,
Thanks, I love your column and have included it in my blogroll. This one is especially awesome. I can't wait to try your slow-roasting method.
