If sources were themselves efficient and sustainable, that would help tremendously, would it not? Our writers have been covering this issue from a few different angles for 6 weeks now. This article is interesting related to David's points: http://www.america.gov/st/env-english/2008/February/20080228144750lcnirellep0.1695825.html

They have a lot of wind power in Houston, too. Here is a similar ranking of cities, but more broad: http://photos.america.gov/maps/amgov/30145/greencities/.

The point about blue collar / green collar is a good one. Schendler's analysis is extremely relevant to a series of articles that our writers publishing now. We talked to a lot of the government and private sector members in some of the U.S. cities trying to move toward efficient building, housing and transporation. These efforts require tradespeople and heavy lifters, as suggested. And although it is early in the process, the attraction of "green collar" jobs is not much different than the attraction of blue collar jobs for the actual tradesperson/business. It'd be nice if more towns like Greensburg, Kansas, existed as a measuring stick. http://www.america.gov/local-government-labs.html
