To be fair, fossil fuels are a much higher percentage of the energy portfolio, and proportional to that, the disparity isn't as dramatic. But also to be fair, as David stated, this doesn't account for externalized costs -- how much does the state absorb in environmental disasters and clean up? Health care issues? Flooding from mountaintop removal? In Kentucky alone, an amazing study by MACED shows that mining and burning coal is costing KY about $115 million per year -- http://www.maced.org/coal/exe-summary.htmOn Fossil fuel subsidies dwarf clean energy subsidies; Obama wants to eliminate them posted 2 months, 1 week ago 13 ResponsesClick here to view comment in original post
Ya'll forgot Darryl Hannah, who has even been arrested a few times for green causes -- most recently to stop mountaintop removal. Much more impressive than eco-consumerism -- putting your freedom and reputation on the line to stop this terrible tragedy.

Coal Mining Our Future is the most hilarious named group yet -- UnderMining our future or Stripmining our future would be even funnier. I'm not sure if they were going for the irony filled metaphor when they left out the comma -- "Coal Mining, Our Future" has a very different ring to it, though.

There are dozens of amazing songs about coal and strip mining and environmental impacts -- generally the good songs are from the perspective of a person personally impacted by the issue instead of a person of privilege trying to guilt someone in to taking action.
There is a hilarious Earth First! song that has the line "must we sacrifice our water earth and air, just to cook a piece of toast or blow dry our hair"
Jean Ritchie has some amazing songs about not destroying the earth

Some people are really crazy. And so many of those crazy people have websites.
Peak coal is pretty scary, though
