"Democrat" or "Progressive" does not necessarily equal good environmental policy.  Read agricultural subsidies, particularly corn-based ethanol. Or pro-union auto company bail-outs that stifle innovation by selecting for market dinosaurs. Or side-lining conservation issues for climate change.  Or drafting climate change bill that has so many coal-state loopholes for coal-state democrats. Or appointing non-congressionally vetted or approved "Czars" peppered throughout Executive Branch (so much for transparency and checks & balances).

Look, I find it hard to believe that Van Jones, the great communicator he is, was the best person for this job.   How about somebody with real business experience that knows what market incentives can promote growth in the "green job" sector.  Does this not make sense for the "Green Jobs Czar?"

Don Hazen and his readers should not be looking out for what's best for the democrat party.  He should be looking out for what promotes best environmental policy.  Sadly, that is not always synomous with our political heroes.

    Chuck Darwin

No mention of Charles Darwin?  That's because these days climate change is "more sexy" than conservation issues.  If the editors of Wired Magazine had their way, we'd all live in nuclear powered lofts surrounded by monocultures of eucalyptus. Biodiversity?-- expendable.

    Biofueling climate change

    Thank you for your article.

Perhaps we can declare President Obama's honeymoon officially over and objectively assess planks of his administration's environmental policy:  Support of corn-based ethanol subsidies (1) encourages land to be taken out of conservation use and cultivated for corn, (2) increases food costs for poor people around the world which may encourage radicalization, (3) increases legal challenges to conservation easements, (4) encourages the increased use of GMO cultigens (hey, it's not food, right?), (5) increases feed costs for ranchers, and (6) net increase use in fossil fuels to produce one gallon of ethanol.

Tom Dashielle: sits on the board of 3 Big Ag corporations, from a farm state.  He's been with Obama since Obama's first day in the Senate.  Not a lobbyist, but conflict of interest is undeniable.  Shame we can believe in.

The way forward: encourage your representative and senators to oppose corn ethanol subsidies, and take off the goo-goo-ga-ga glasses for Obama. On Biofuels may speed up, not slow global warming: study posted 9 months, 1 week ago 2 Responses
