Veg version
For those of you looking for a vegetarian version, I think this would actually be pretty easy to veganize. I'd throw in a can of chickpeas (good with the curry) in place of the chicken and sausage, then add some fresh ginger for extra flavor (good with curry, orange, and sherry).

Inexpensive, nurturing soups for vegetarians
All these soups look lovely - frugal, delicious, and nutritious.
For those of us who don't eat meat, lentil soups make a good substitute for ham-bone and vegetable type soups.
Here are three good ones - all vegan or easily made vegan.
