"NASCAR is a "sport" much like football and a very popular "sport"." Sorry, you couldn't be more wrong. Auto racing is motorized recreation and requires absolutely no athletic ability. (It requires motor skills ability.) But whether auto racing is a sport, which I consider it not to be, is not an important issue. The important issue is that it glorifies the internal combustion engine, and consumes and burns fuel for absolutely no reason. You may be able to make a somewhat credible argument that cars are necessary evils, but there is no case to be made that ANY motorized recreation is anything but totally needless environmental destruction. On NASCAR and the high-octane American dream posted 1 month, 1 week ago 11 Responses

This is a travesty. It makes a mockery of the Nobel Peace Prize and removes all credibility from it. Obama is just another U.S. war monger, with wars continuing in Iraq and Afghanistan, the latter of which he has escalated and might continue to do so. This is the opposite of the type of person who is qualified to win this once-prestigious award. On Obama’s Nobel: What it means for greens posted 1 month, 1 week ago 5 Responses

The elephant in the room, which is never mentioned, is that overpopulation is a main cause of the water problems. Large numbers of humans should not be living in arid areas. Of course, having pools, watering lawns of non-native grass, and growing crops like cotton that require a lot of water just makes things worse. But unless we drastically lower our population, this problem will not be solved. On The end of welfare water and the drying of the West posted 2 months ago 7 Responses

"... support for environmentally friendly measures generally runs strong among the French. But a TNS Sofres survey released Thursday showed two-thirds of voters were against the tax ..."

This non-sequitor is a fundamental part of what's wrong and why we're getting nowhere on this or other environmental problems.  People want to think of themselves as environmentalists, but hardly anyone is willing to make the sacrifices necessary in order to actually get anything significant done.  Don't believe the baloney about voters not thinking the tax would do anything, that's just their way of rationalizing why they won't make the sacrifice.  Unless humans grow up and realize they cannot have their cake and eat it too, they will just continue to destroy the Earth until it becomes very difficult or impossible to live here.

"France’s Socialist opposition has also warned against penalizing low-income families with a flat levy on fuel, especially those in out-of-town areas who have no choice but to use cars."

This is where I part ways with the left.  First, no one has the right to cause environmental harm, including poor people.  Second, the leftist attitude of, "Oh, the poor [fill in the blank]" is idiotic and has got to go.  Sure, some people have been really screwed over by those with power and money, but taking this attitude toward everything is as wrong as not having any sympathy or empathy at all.  No one is forced to live anywhere in France.  If people insist on living "out-of-town," in France or elsewhere, they should learn to ride horses and bicycles or get along without unnaturally fast forms of transportation.  For those who don't like that, move to the cities where you can walk, bike, and ride public transit.

That all said, this is a very good but very small step in the right direction.  Raising gasoline prices by a quarter  wouldn't even have a significant effect in the U.S., and gas prices in France are much higher.  But if the tax continues to rise, behaviors will change at some point.  I don't like Sarkozy because he's a right winger, but I strongly applaud him for this brave move.  If only Obama had his huevos!

As some other posters on this thread have said, I'll believe it when I see it.  There are no doubt many people in the EPA who want to do the right thing and have been prevented from doing it during the Bush/Cheney administration.  But Obama is not progressive and seems to be a very weak president who has no idea how to get things done over objections of powerful industries.  Add to those facts that Obama is a coal industry supporter, and this story seems to merely hold out false hope.
