As someone who has analyzed climate change impacts professionally, I agree with Mr. Coleman that the CO2 climate impact comes from burning fossil fuel. However, his overall discussion strikes me as as ideologically-based and non-scientifically substantiated as those of my vegan friends. Both sides lead me in circles. I agree with this poster:

"Do you recommend any relevant reports for the skeptical veggies in the room? Have there been any peer reviewed studies on this? If not, could you point some researchers in the right direction? "

It's debatable as to whether this is an effective program, even on the author's guarded terms. What was the actual, current usage of the cars being traded in? Was it a primary family vehicle, or one broken down in the garage, which be replaced by more driving in a fancy new car?

Life cycle costs of vehicle production?

Cost efficiency at $4500 a trade-in? Clearly, the trade-in stipend was much higher than it needed to be to inspire car purchases, since demand outstripped demand immediately.

    what about styrafoam?

If anyone has done research on how using styrafoam disposable trays compares to durable tray wash water consumption impacts, I'm all ears.On Umbra on eco-friendly detergents posted 11 months ago 13 Responses

    agreed

This is what I do at work, too.  In addition to Umbra's advice, I would say let the committee brainstorm so that they get excited and have some ownership over what you take on.  Include some easy, low-hanging items, like saving paper and fixing the autoflush toilets, so that people see results and feel like they are making a difference.  On the flip side, the group may spend an inordinate amount of time talking about buying recycled post-its, when what they really need to do is stop driving their SUVs.  Let them vent, then do research, use your expertise, and/or get someone who knows the relative impacts of actions to help you prioritize.

Our Action Plan is divided into Transportation, Energy, Waste, Land, Water, and Engagement.  Depending what your company does, most of these categories will work for you.

As breebee notes, a lot of decisions happen in Procurement, so be sure to work closely with them.

Friendly competitions, and free food, never hurt, either.  Really, any experience you have with schools should carry over (except you don't have to paint the recycling bins). On Umbra on greening the office posted 11 months, 3 weeks ago 3 Responses
