I get the sentiment, but the attitude might be a bit (I hate myself for using this word) elitist, and that may alienate people rather than encourage them to get involved. (Kind of like all those pretentious hipsters a few years ago who had me hating the Decembrists before I'd even heard them).
No one thinks that Earth Day is an excuse to be good one day and a polluting ass the next, any more than people think it's OK to shit on black people every month but February.
Just sayin. Love you guys, but gotta disagree on this one.

TX coast was once among the most biodiverse...
...in the world.
Sadly, this is no longer the case. What's worse, the Bay Area/Houston ship channel (Galveston Bay, not the other Bay Area), with all it's petro-chemical plants and a huge population, is a catastrophe waiting to happen. It would make Bhopal look like a minor mishap.
Glad someone is shedding some light on what's going on there (and thanks to Grist for giving it some more exposure).

For a gas tax
For no other reason then the fact that Americans will continue to buy gas-guzzling SUVs as long as the fuel is cheap.
If high fuel prices spur energy innovation and conservation, then keep the prices high through taxes. We can't trust the auto manufacturers and oil companies to do it themselves.
