even local farms are not sustainable.
I would like to point out that animal agriculture is not sustainable whether local or not. A 2006 UN report reveals that animal agriculture is responsible for far more greenhouse gasses than any other source including all transportation on earth. No matter where a cow is raised she is still going to expel gas. The environmental community is taking notice and I am pleased to say that the food at this year's Green Festival in DC was vegan except for one dairy item I was told about. The EPA has long been telling us that runoff from farms is the largest source of water pollution. In addition animal agriculture is resource intensive, the water consumption alone being an average of 30 gallons for one pound of beef.
In 2005 the USDA reports that in addition to what we imported the US slaughtered 9 billion chickens and 32.4 million cows. We simply do not have the space or water to keep these animals? I hope Ms. Hatz will either modify her position or change the name of her group.
