  Conflict-free diamond alternatives

  Acknowledging that a significant number of people will continue to buy diamonds despite the impact of the Blood Diamond movie, it is good to see the emergence of companies providing a more responsible product. I have worked with one such company in San Francisco, Brilliant Earth (www.brilliantearth.com) which has been getting lots of press for carrying exclusively traceable conflict-free Canadian-origin diamonds and using recycled gold in jewelry.  Not zero-footprint but a whole lot better than most of the stuff out there. The comapany also donates a % to Diamonds for Africa (www.diamondsforafricafund.org), a nonprofit doing development work in African diamond communities.
