sustainable food in low income neighborhoods?
Don't fool yourself, most folks in low income neighborhoods, in the inner-city and the inner-ring, suburban slums see organic and sustainable foods as something for rich white folks. The job of connecting poor folks with healthy food is not being done. Practically as a matter of policy, poor folks are not able to access anything but processed foods and this is why obesity is epidemic. As our top down controlled market (nothing free about it) colonizes the rest of the world so this epidemic spreads. The few efforts to build and teach a culture of healthy eating are swiftly countered and beaten down by corporate dollars. With few exceptions, people working independently of the market don't know how to connect their struggle for sustainable food with the needs of poor people, and this is nothing more than a matter of cultural misunderstanding. A bigger barrier to change you will not find.
