Whole Foods 3

Readers who found our interview with John Mackey, founder and CEO of Whole Foods, interesting, may also be interested in this Forbes story on Whole Foods, which focuses on the "food-as-porn" marketing and business strategy of the growing (mostly) organic giant.

Eat Organically, Buy LocallyI recently received an e-mail citing an article that claimed that, in addition to buying organic food, (where possible), it is important, from an environmental perspective, to make an effort to buy locally grown food.  Generally speaking, this makes good sense.  There is, however, one area where I feel inclined to quibble.  I live in California, and I try to grow my own strawberries.  If, however, I had a bad season, and was unable to find organically grown,  (or, at least, methyl-bromide free), strawberries at the local market,  my inclination would be to get a packet of frozen berries from the Pacific Northwest, because most commercial growers in California use methyl bromide, (and other chemicals),  and I don't want to support that at all.  What do you think?

LocalStorm Dragon, we covered that story in the Daily Grist:

One problem is that study only compared the relative energy intensity and pollution involved -- the environmental effects.  The health issues are entirely separate.  It would be nice if everyone was like you and knew enough about their options to make an educated choice, weighing environmental and health implications.  That information should be much easier to get, don't you think?
