What's your shoe size?

You know what they say about enviros with big feet ... 3

three pairs of shoes

Each of these pairs of shoes represents a different (real) woman in a new feature at Marie Claire: "Whose Carbon Footprint Is the Smallest?"

See if you can guess:

  1. THE URBAN HIPSTER
"I eat out way too much. I drink bottled water. I do the club scene a lot. Am I busted?" --Nikea, 29, public defender
  2. THE MOUNTAIN MAVEN
"Even my cappuccino maker and hair dryer are solar-powered." --Melissa, 33, land-conservation program manager
  3. THE GLOBE-TROTTER
"I've never learned how to drive. I always use public transportation." --Josie, 26, marketing manager

I guessed right! It's amusing to me how much country folk like to blame environmental problems on the city folk, but city living really is the way to go. I don't quite understand why some people like to go and live off grid in the middle of nowhere, only to get in their cars each weekday and drive a million miles to work.  I get in my car, which I share with my housemate, maybe once a week. We're forced by budget to have a small apartment.  And there's a lot more options in the way of more eco-friendly vegetarian food in the city.

Too easyThe self-righteous "enviro" clearly lives in a remote mountain abode and drives everywhere for everything in something that gets 12 mpg, and the "globetrotter" flies everywhere.

They all sound fun, though.I would not mind meeting Melissa, in fact.  It is not easy for me to figure out how one and the same woman can wear boots like that, and still be bothered with a cappuccino maker and a hair dryer.
As for sophisticated urban hipsters, and what magazines they read: For what it is worth, my husband, a librarian at Barnard College here in NYC, reports that his library does indeed subscribe to "Marie Claire"; he and some of his colleagues would like to drop the subscription, but in fact it is much read by their young patrons.  Another, even more surprising and controversial favorite is "Brides."
