We’re all going to die 5

Wow, well ... shit.

This piece in Fortune, adapted by Eugene Linden from his book Winds of Change, is a front-runner for the most depressing thing I've ever read. I don't see how anyone could read it and feel anything other than depressed paralysis.

I guess you should read it, if depressed paralysis is your thing. Me, I'm headed to Costco to buy some bottled water, canned food, and a rifle.

not so badNo surprises here- everything he said is old news to those paying attention to climate science. He is too optimistic in my opinion- of course there is a 'tipping point', because the variables are interdependent. Gradual change is the result of a calm, happy planet, not one beriddled with the disease that humanity has become. Ecosystems destroyed, the air and water poisoned- Mother is pissed, and She's gonna kick our asses right off the planet.
He's right about market forces- too little, too late. We need government intervention because profit motives are short sighted. It's not just a 'collective failure of imagination', but our near-sightedness. We say "I'm only clear-cutting 100 acres, their's still plenty of forests elsewhere, it'll grow back". But the guy on the other side of the forest is saying the same thing, and when rain washes away the topsoil, and developers move in, the forest can't grow back.
Only if we change our short and near-sighted view of the world and force change into our relationship with Mother will we stand a chance of survival. If you want depressing, look at what our leaders are saying in the face of all this.

Oh that lovelockI can most certainly appreciate the end of the world as much as the next person.  Truly, if such a thing were to occur, I am will be the one assisting in passing out the aluminum foil hats to the masses.  However, seeing as how this Lovelock offers little more than propaganda, I will save my hat making for a later date.

Though our current administration insists that global warming is but a figment of our imagination,  the majority of us who are able to read believe that such a thing does exist.

Anyone wearing a placard can proclaim that the end is near.  It takes intelligence and sensitivity to be able to use information in a way that will promote awareness and the possibility of positve changes.  It is a waste of trees to simply foretell inescapable destruction of all mankind.  Gloom and doom only captures the attention for so long.  What would actually be helpful is to actually say what can be done to avert such destruction.

Placards and Crazy PeopleHaven't people been doing that for the last 30 years or so, since the first oil crisis?  There has been some success, absolutely.  There is a population that actually thinks about how their decisions about what to buy and where to drive affect everything else.  But given how much more petroleum we consume now compared to then, it doesn't seem like we've made much progress.

Positive change is all good.  Awareness is absolutely necessary.  But aware, slow, positive change will not yield the kind of global societal changes that are neccessary in the time we've got (even if you think we have another 30 years).  Witness how far America has turned back over the last 5 years.  You have to have people like Lovelock poking and prodding, pushing people out of their comfort zones.
