Obama says trade agreements must protect environment 2

Any trade agreements signed by soon-to-be-President Barack Obama must “[preserve] the planet we all share,” the president-elect declared Friday. Chief trade negotiator nominee Ron Kirk concurred: “[A] values-driven agenda that stays true to our commitment to ... environmental sustainability is not only consistent with a pro-trade agenda, but it’s also necessary for its success.” Obama previously promised to work with Mexico and Canada to add stronger labor and environmental provisions to NAFTA.

Empty PromiseGlobal trade accomplished by industrial transportation is environmentally destructive per se.  The problem is that none of these people prioritize the environment.  They either just give it lip service or, at best, add it to a laundry list of issues as if it were just another issue.

So...Renegotiate CAFTA, WTO, NAFTA, etc? Sounds like a good idea to me. Wouldn't mind seeing them go away completely, as they are entirely much too authoritarian for my taste. Chapter 11 in NAFTA is particularly appalling.
