The grill of victory

Over half of Americans want to barbecue with Barack 4

Muckraker: Grist on Politics

The survey you've all been waiting for: 52 percent of Americans say they would prefer to have Barack Obama at their 4th of July shindig.

Only 45 percent reported that they would prefer McCain, according to the latest Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll.

Says the AP: "People would rather barbecue burgers with Barack than munch meats with McCain." That includes one in six people who said they plan to vote for McCain in November. Only one in 20 Obama voters said they would invite McCain to their BBQ.

    Obama's Bar-B-Que MenuAt first Obama proposed two burgers for everyone.  But he realized public funding wouldn't cover it, so he decided to use private sources.  At the barbecue, he said that lettuce would be banned, but garden growers protested and he capitulated, changing a long standing policy.   Initially, he said he would "go the barbeque", but later sent an advisor, saying he would not stoop to "McCain like" grilling tactics.  He then offered subsidies to barbecuers...but only if they limited their C02 to near zero.  Protests erupted...and he said they could grill, but only if the local coal plant would reduce electricity...which he fears would bankrupt the economy.   Meeting with coal representatives, he reversed his position, and instead sent Bill Clinton to all the barbecues to make amends.   Clinton ate half the hamburgers and left when there was no more relish.   Obama's policy remains cautious, with a touch of optimism and some glazed onions.

    "summer cookout"?Considering that we do these polls all the time, we really ought to learn to analyse them much better than we do.
    "Invitation to your summer cookout" implies:

    you have a backyard;
    you like to have guests, occasionally, perhaps to show off how much real estate you own;
    you eat meat, you think eating meat is normal, you think your guests would enjoy an occasion to eat meat that you provide.

    Needless to say, not all Americans are in that position.
    Or rather: apparently there IS a need to say that.  We Americans who are in no position either to host or to attend a "summer cookout" are apparently being marginalized.
    To say nothing of those of us who do not eat meat, nor would serve it.
    As for McCain vs. Obama: From what I have seen, which is plenty, I do not like either of those men, personally, and would not invite them to any sort of get-together at any level in this home.  And in fairness, au contraire, they both of them indicate that they would be in excruciating pain to be locked into a social event at a household such as mine.  So, WTF.

    No problem, Amazing.If Michael and I were having Barack and Michelle over for dinner, it would be lovely, and supremely American, to ask in advance, whisperingly, "What don't you eat?; what doesn't he eat?; we can make something for the girls, but what do they eat?; they can play for a bit with Little Dog, before we put them to bed ... "
    And Americans who do not understand that sort of etiquette should be denied the vote.  : (
