That spade is a spade

Unusually straightforward journalistic fact-checking at the Post 1

Huge kudos to Juliet Eilperin and Steven Mufson at the Post. You don't often see traditional journalists willing to call out the Bush administration's lies and distractions so plainly:

Seeking to counter international pressure to adopt binding limits on greenhouse gas emissions, the Bush administration has been touting the success of three mandatory programs to curb U.S. energy consumption: gas mileage standards for vehicles, efficiency standards for home appliances and state laws requiring utilities to increase their use of renewable energy sources.

But for most of the Bush presidency, the White House has either done little to promote these measures or, in some cases, has actively fought against them. Moreover, the fuel economy and appliance initiatives were first taken years ago to slash energy consumption, long before climate change became a pressing issue.

Now was that so hard?

It's even worse...Bravo to Eilperin and Mufson for straightening the spin, but the situation is even worse when it comes to energy efficiency, as blogged by David Roberts back in March at this site:

The nonpartisan U.S. Government Accountability Office recently issue a blistering report on the Department of Energy's delinquent treatment of energy efficiency standards. Despite a mandate from Congress, DOE has missed all 34 deadlines for issues standards covering everything from consumer products to power transformers. Only 11 sets of standards have been completed; 23 remain unfinished.
Even the things the Bush administration is taking credit for have been obstructed or mismanaged.
