Lily Allen backs U.K. solar incentive campaign 3

Brit popster Lily Allen has sung about "riding through the city on [her] bike all day" at the Premises solar-powered recording studio. Now, she's added her backing to a campaign to reward homes that generate their own green energy.

The amendment to an energy bill in Parliament this week introduces a "feed-in tariff," which would "guarantee a minimum price for all renewable energy generated by homes and businesses through a system of long-term contracts with energy companies."

Thanks for your support, Lil' -- that amendment oughta be a shoo-in now ...

    A waste of money

I'm groing tired of popstars supporting wasteful initiatives that look green.

Solar power is 20 to 30 times less efficient in turning our economies green than other options (like conservation or using biomass.)

Each dollar spent on these ludicrously expensive technologies is one not spent on equally efficient or better technologies that cost far less.

This way, we'll never make a dent in the climate threat.

There should be a moratorium on solar power, until prices come down by a factor of 10 to 20.

    Better than Nothing, and Something

20-30% is better than nothing considering how reluctant we are to conserve.  And considering the mess our headlong leap into corn has made, I'd say lets make sure of the big picture before we ruin whats left of the food supply. People are willing to DO this,NOW. That is worth a whole lot.  If it shows them a different method, they will be more open to change. If we make it a potential profit maker, well then....BINGO!

    Solar's the solution

If you install windmills or solar panels to make electricity for our homes, and you spread the cost over 20 years, the electricity each year does not cost any more than if you build a plant that burns coal or natural gas for 20 years to make the electricity, depending on the price of the fuel and the amount of wind or sunlight available.
We can stop global warming by switching immediately away from fossil fuels with technology that already exists.

For generations, Congress has been granting huge subsidies for oil and natural gas exploration and development and related facilities. It has only  allocated a tiny amount to subsidies for alternative energy. This does not even count the 43% of our taxes that go to pay for defense although much of that cost goes to make sure the big oil companies can develop oil and gas fields.

While we conserve energy, individually and locally, we also have to fight against the fossil fool leviathan.
