Storage in the spotlight

Congress finally pays attention to energy storage tech 1

I missed this when it happened, but (via Hill Heat) it's nice to see that the House science committee recently held a hearing on energy storage technology. It's a woefully underappreciated piece of the energy puzzle and overdue for some concerted attention.

In the context of the hearing, the Subcommittee also discussed draft legislation entitled Energy Storage Technology Advancement Act of 2007, a bill soon to be introduced by Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN).

"Energy storage is also critical for the next generation of vehicles, which will help reduce our dependence on foreign oil and lower greenhouse gas emissions," added Chairman Gordon. "I also think public-private partnerships can improve the production process for advanced vehicle components so that the U.S. becomes a leader in manufacturing these breakthrough technologies. With so many benefits of energy storage technologies, I think additional federal investment to research, test and advance these systems should be a priority."

Word.

backing storageThankfully, storage has been getting a lot of press lately (relatively speaking, of course). We're trying to breathe new life into the Energy Storage Council, which was founded to promote storage to decision makers on The Hill as well as to the public. It had a great early run--we were able to get favorable language specifically addressing and supporting storage in the Energy Policy Act of 2005--but the enthusiasm for all things storage ebbed and the ESC went dormant (kinda...we've continued trying to spread the word...).
At any rate, we are very fortunate to be able to work with the recognized "guru" of storage, a gentleman by the name of Septimus van der Linden, who recently pointed me in the direction of a blog with a tremendous amount of storage information posted (including references to Sep's own work)...check it out:  Green Thoughts.
