Stop your junk mail and plant a tree

One dime a month is all it takes 4

Just this morning I had to rip up the zillionth letter I've gotten from some anonymous agency somewhere out in Arizona urging me to reconsolidate my student loan (something I did years ago.) I tossed it into the recycling bin without further ado.

Now a start-up company called Greendimes promises to put an end to this incessant barrage of junkmail. For $3 a month, or a dime a day, the staff at GD will do the legwork to get you off of mailing lists and other pesky databases that flood your postbox with unnecessary paper. And each month they will plant a tree on your behalf through collaboration with Trees for the Future.

So not only will you be putting a dent in the estimated 100 million trees chopped down every year to generate junkmail, you will become the proud parent of 12 saplings for each year you subscribe to Greendimes.

I can't think of a nicer Christmas present than a brood of baby trees and no junkmail to boot. Of course, you can't for ethical reasons sign someone else up (hey, some people actually enjoy credit card correspondence). But there is a gift membership that allows you to spread the anti-consumption glee.

Check out this interview with Greendime's founder, Pankaj Shah.

other ways to stop junk mailgreendime ... a great idea ... but for those of us to prefer to not shell out the cash, try:

stuffing as much as you can in the postage-paid return envelope, clearly noting on the piece of paper with all your personal info that you want to be removed from the mailing list (i use a big black marker: very cathartic!)
emailing the company (so it takes 10 seconds to find their email, it's worth it!), giving them all the info, including any funny looking numbers above your name, asking to be removed.

and to prevent getting on lists, don't forget national marketing associations which have 'do not contact' lists.  in canada you can sign up at:

    http://www.the-cma.org/consumer/donotcontact.cfm
also, if you make donations, make clear that you do not wish to receive their promotional materials or any further requests for funds just because you have made a donation.
these have worked for me, and have almost completely eliminated addressed junk mail to my house ... at least in kinder, gentler canada.

Greendimes takes a while to kick in...Just so you know, it takes a while for your name to be purged from all the lists that are out there.

Junk Mail - Save A Tree, PleaseI've called in to the number for the U.S. that supposedly gets you off of every piece of junk mail, credit card offers, checks to be used against your credit card number, etc. As promised, a few days after my phone call a packet arrived. I filled out every piece of info wanted. Two times, two packets: one for me, one for my husband.
Wouldn't you say I did all I was expected to do for a lifetime of less wasted forest growth? I guess not. Three days ago, I kid you not, we received in our rural mailbox 9 (nine!) Christmas catalogs. The ones that were not repeats of catalogs we were already receiving and already had a Christmas copy were from companies we had never heard of.
The laws have been passed. The companies have been legally notified. Yet we still receive a plethora of nice looking, slick covered, beautifully photographed catalogs. How very discouraging!

In Peace, Harmony and Unity may we find ways to work together to meet our common goal - the health of our earthly Home.
