South Korean court jails captain of oil tanker involved in 2007 spill 3

The captain and first mate of an oil tanker that caused South Korea's largest oil spill last year have been convicted of criminal negligence for failing to avoid a collision with a barge. Members of the barge crew were also jailed for their role in the collision, which dumped some 2.7 million gallons of crude oil into the Yellow Sea.

And the grand fine is......$21,000.  Or aprox. 20 cents for every barrel spilled.
Anyone else know of a situation where a barrel of oil is worth only 20 cents?

ConsequencesIf they were held responsible for that crash and spillage then Chevron should definitely pay for they did in Ecuador. Dumping 18 billion gallons of oil and toxic water into the streams, contaminating drinking water, destroying people's lives cannot go unpunished!  Over 1,000 people have died from cancer and thousands more are sick with skin disease and respiratory illness. If you want to find out more about what is surely the largest environmental disaster on the planet, read this blog, http://www.thechevronpit.blogspot.com.com and this article, http://www.http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laplaza/2008/1 ...

Jail Oil Company Executives & DriversThose are the causes of oil spills.  Ship captains are just symptoms of symptoms.  Not that they shouldn't be held responsible for bad behavior as everyone should, but jailing and/or blaming them for oil spills will do nothing to avert future spills.
