SOTU hangover 6

I'm all burned out from blogging last night. What do y'all want to talk about?

Ha!I saw that last night and laughed... my boyfriend insisted he was reading something in his lap.  Buzzkill.
Let's talk about how difficult it must have been for Nancy Pelosi to keep that blank expression during W's speech last night.. I have to give her credit, the only time she appeared to be literally biting her cheeks was during the 20,000-more-troops spiel.  Also, what is up with all the blinking??  I think she needs to look into hypoallergenic mascara... not tested on animals, natch.
Hil, on the other hand, looked downright annoyed for most of the speech and she looked like she was straining mightily to keep from rolling her eyes, especially when he was talking about the deficit.  Of course, when she last lived in the White House, there was a budget surplus, but hey...  I'm sure that was a leftover from sound Republican fiscal policy.
Wherefore art thou, Barry O?  Did anyone see him there last night?  I'm surprised he'd miss the chance to mug for the cameras.
Actually, to give credit where it is due, I thought this was one of the best speeches he's given (not that that says a lot). I wonder who wrote it.

I only heard the speech on the radio ...... which I suspect is quite a different experience. I love watching people try to control their normal human reactions.
Did you see the bit -- I only read about it -- where Bush talked about how we have to stay in Iraq and virtually everybody sat on their hands ... except Cheney, who gave it a standing O? Hilarious.
I also heard that Pelosi stood to applaud the reducing-gasoline-use plan, but Cheney stayed seated. What an ass.
The words of the speech were OK from craft standpoint, but without a coherent message, no amount of good writing can save you.

Webb's ResponseAlternet had this to say about Webb's response:
If you watched freshman Virginia Sen. Jim Webb deliver the Democratic response to Bush's State of the Union speech, you witnessed something historic -- a Democrat on national TV unabashedly ripping into six years of Bush rule for an uninterrupted 10 minutes.
With no O'Reilly or Hannity to disrupt or out-shout him.
    Amen to that.

Only got to read about it
On Chinese TV, one of the discussion shows (Dialogue, on the English language channel, some of you can actually get it there!) had an American professor and a Chinese professor.  The American looked like he wanted to rip his skin off when he talked about Iraq.  It's so bad, and Congress isn't really going to do anything about it.
There was little mention (I want to say "no", but maybe I missed it) of the Environmental part, which goes to show how much perceived impact it had.  The talk was in terms of energy policy (which we know is different).
More about the health care, and general economy, and about immigration (naturally).
It sort of felt like people are at a loss as to how to react to speeches that are so out of touch with reality.
