Solar Is So PC

Scientists using consumers’ computing power to develop new solar cell 3

Researchers at IBM and Harvard University launched a project recently that aims to use a network of consumers' home computers to run calculations that could lead to new, more efficient solar panels. "It's a way for people that have computers to do some good for the world," said Joe Jasinski of IBM.

Here's the linksThe software to run the computations is called BOINC. You can also share computing time with other well-known projects like Seti@home and Folding@home, setting percentage of free computer cycles to dedicate to each.
Once BOINC is installed the project to run is the World Computing Project run by IBM.
The Clean Energy Project in particular is the one that is trying to find more efficient solar cells.

No Macs allowed right nowRight now there is no Mac love for the Clean Energy Project section at World Community Grid.  They say to check back soon for a Beta.  There are, however, other good causes there to donate computer time to, like cancer and AIDS.
Instead, I am looking at http://www.climateprediction.net/index.php
They have a Mac client specifically for working on climate prediction models.  I'm donating my time to them while I wait for the other guys to get their Mac stuff off the ground.
