We Shale See

Western lands opened to oil-shale development 3

The Bush administration on Monday cleared the way for tens of thousands of acres in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming to be used for oil-shale development, publishing final rules governing how federal land will be leased for extraction of the expensive, pollute-y, only recently un-banned fuel source. Companies tapping into oil shale will have to pay far less in royalties than the going rate for conventional gas and oil. Still, commercial oil-shale leasing is at least five to 10 years off.

Oil Shale? Not expected until 2018 (if at all...)It seems, unfortunately that oil shale is notoriously expensive and low quality, from what I've read, for example Post Carbon Institute:

Oil shale: the fuel of the future…and it always will be.
    US News and World Report:

Good! Now if we can start drilling offshore, we'll be on the right track.

Offshore? What we'll really need to do offshore is take the salt etc. out of that water and ship it to where they want to process the oil shale.
In Colorado they're going to run out of water to extract the oil before any of it gets to your gasoline tank.
