Conservationists have analyzed public comments on a Bureau of Land Management proposal to drill for oil and gas on Colorado's Roan Plateau and have come up with a tally: seven comments for drilling; approximately 42,000 against. Hm -- guess it's not a consensus then.

Yeah, right. Requesting and reviewing comments on an agency proposal is a totally rigged process that almost never works the way it's supposed to due to the political proclivities of agency decision makers. (The organic standard controversy of a few years ago was a rare exception, but only due to the extreme volume of responses and their lopsidedness against lowering organic standards.) That's why environmentalists' only recourse is often in court. Unfortunately, even there we are dealing with mostly Republican judges who think that money and business are more important than the environment.
