RNC: Beaming Bush

In convention address via satellite, out-going prez calls for offshore drilling 1

President George Bush just addressed the convention via satellite from the White House, after deciding coming to the convention during Hurricane Gustav might not be the best plan. The crowd was pretty enthusiastic about the president's address, despite hard feelings among plenty of people here about Bush's legacy.

Bush made a joke about how voting for McCain is "trading up." And he made sure to talk up McCain's pro-drilling stance: "He will lift the ban for American offshore drilling today."

"I know the hard choices that fall solely to a president. John McCain is ready to lead this nation as president," said Bush.

Oil addicts chant "drill drill drill."Oil addicts chant "drill drill drill." But with less than 3% of the world's oil reserves, we can drill like crazy and never slash prices on the world market. If instead we increase fuel efficiency to 35 mpg by 2020, we will cut demand by a million barrels a day.
Offshore drilling threatens our beautiful coastlines. Each year we pour 880,000 gallons of oil in the ocean. Katrina and Rita destroyed 113 oil platforms in the Gulf, damaged 457 pipelines, and caused 124 different spills in 2005. Oil-drilling and water don't mix.
And stop oily speculators. Gerry Ramm, the President of Inland Oil, told Money and Markets in June, "Excessive speculation on energy-trading facilities is the fuel that is driving this runaway train in crude oil prices."
Americans are immensely vigorous and smart. In World War II, our country converted its industrial infrastructure overnight to producing the tanks, planes and ships that won the war. Kennedy said "let's put a man on the moon," and by 1969 we did. In 2008 we can put our people back to work, win our freedom from oil and lead the world in energy innovation. Do we have the gumption?
