Palin asks Schwarzenegger to veto bill that would reduce port pollution 7

One day before being catapulted into the running for GOP vice president, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin wrote a letter to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), urging him to veto a significant pollution-reduction effort. Specifically, she asked the Governator to not sign a bill that would impose container fees on ships entering the ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Oakland. If OK'd, the fees would bring in an estimated $400 million per year, which would go toward installation of cleaner truck and train engines and projects aimed to reduce congestion and idling. Palin said the fee will harm Alaska's economy by burdening shippers already dealing with high fuel prices, and "may harm California by driving port business away from its ports." The three ports together handle more than 40 percent of U.S. goods. Says state Sen. Alan Lowenthal (D), who sponsored the bill, "We are losing about 3,400 Californians each year because of pollution. ... I don't think Gov. Palin truly understands the impacts going on here."

Click on the little link next to sourceand it says,
"Schwarzenegger has not yet responded to Palin's letter, nor has he made a decision about whether to sign or veto the legislation, said spokeswoman Rachel Cameron.
"The governor will take it into consideration," she said of Palin's letter.
But she said Schwarzenegger has warned that he will not sign any bills until the state's overdue budget is approved by the Legislature." LA Times.

Anything That Reduces Industrial Shipping ...is a good thing.  Higher prices for shipping containers, which is how most global freight is shipped, would cause a rise in prices and hopefully less consumption, resulting in less environmentally harmful shipping.
Things like this are baby steps, but they're at least moving in the right direction.

WolverineLet's shut down the economy. That will be great for the environment. Of course, there will be massive unemployment, but what the hell.

California port container taxThe most disturbing part of the Governors comments reside not in the comments per se. That she should be on the national stage and have someone even remark on her comments is the outrage..... and the clear and present danger to our country.

How this nasty, secretive little pit bull came to be considered a candidate for Vice President of these United States is that which should terrify us all.

This travesty of democratic life is the real weakness of our democracy, not her silly and frivolous comments about a business with no relation to chauffeuring her children to and from the hockey rink.

jolly good - LEForbesCould not have said it better myself. We all are familiar with the untrustworthy reputation of pit bulls. I think she has chosen her "spirit animal" well.
