The offset company for this event uses forestry in its offset credits, which really isn't the most efficient thing, but they also use renewables like solar and wind energy, which is better.
Now if they'd just do the same thing with all the games.
Anybody know if they intend for this to become a regular thing?

Where were the trees planted, what sort of vegetation did they replace, and who will ensure the trees are left alone to naturally fall and return their carbon to the soil one to three hundred years from now?
If this is done regularly for all sporting events, how long before we run out of arable land suitable for trees, but currently void of trees, other vegetation, or not being used for other purposes? I hope no one thinks it is okay to plants trees where we currently grow food... it would be awful to choose a carbon-neutral sporting event over feeding people.

Wouldn't it be better to use plates, cup, forks, and spoons that lock up carbon forever?
