New Scientist on how our economy is killing the earth 3

New Scientist: Everything rising

The graph above comes from the introduction to the New Scientist's special report: "How our economy is killing the Earth." It takes the following as its central premise:

A growing band of experts are looking at figures like these and arguing that personal carbon virtue and collective environmentalism are futile as long as our economic system is built on the assumption of growth. The science tells us that if we are serious about saving Earth, we must reshape our economy.

Question growth?! I must have picked up New Socialist by accident!

Check out the report -- it's jam-packed with interesting stuff from Herman Daly, Gus Speth, David Suzuki, and many others. For more on the statistics behind the above graph, see here. And check out this doozy of an infographic:

understand exponential functionsUnless you do that, you cannot offer a cure.
None of your solutions will scale well against the problem : whether it is the task of satisfying energy needs or food needs of our society, or preserving the biodiversity of the planet.

Let's think in terms of eco-dollars.

Good point, vakibsIf we can find ways to reduce consumption by x % per year, we will have halved consumption in 70/x years. So a mere 3% reduction per year in physical throughput will half resource depletion/carbon buildup in 35 years.
The exponential function going down could be our saviour.

Oops, that should be 23 years of course...even better!
