Near the end of this year's Netroots Nation, event planners announced that next year's gathering will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa., a spot selected for its green merits. One of the main reasons is that Pittsburgh has the first and largest LEED gold-certified convention center in the country.

"We have a goal of making 2009 the most environmentally-friendly gathering ever," wrote event planners in an email last night. They're also planning to start a carbon-offset program and will encourage attendees to take rail travel instead of flying, since Pittsburgh is more accessible by rail than Austin.

    AmtrakAnyone know why the train from DC to Pittsburgh takes twice as long as driving (7:45 trip time on Amtrak's website vs. 4:15 on Google Maps driving)?

    netroot meetingdid anyone out there think of this before they planned it.  meetings, gatherings, or whatever you want to call it are by it's very nature prescribed to creating waste and are in my opinion extremly ungreen.  think of bathrooms toilet paper , soap, water, the heat caused by thousands of people in close proximity to others. vehicle because i am sure even if all showed up in a toyata prius with 5 people in a car it would still be a cluster. then there are the food and snack vendors ice and refrigeration needed to keep people and food cool it all seems to go against the grain of what we are trying to create which at its core is a society that in total just doesnt consume as much.
