Mobilien, oui

Bus rapid transit in Paris 2

Here's a video from Streetblogs about Mobilien, the excellent bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Paris that launched in 2004:

In implementing the system, Paris eliminated a great deal of street parking. Quel horror!

    Bon Marche!It's cheap too.
You can build tens of BRTs for the price of one overburdened limited range "Light Rail" fiasco.

cheap?Well, cheap if you use existing roads.  BRT systems are far from cheap if you consider them as a whole.  They require far more vehicles and therefore far more drivers (which is where much of the expense comes in).  They require diesel (ok, or biodiesel - but that's another debate), tires, and far more maintenance.  Then, for it to be anything better than a bus, they need to have their own right-of-way.  In this case they use space that used to be parking (a nice trick), but in general roads are more expensive than rail.
