Keeping tabs on Tampa

Florida city takes another smart(ish) step 2

Yesterday, the Tampa city council gave preliminary approval to a plan that offers incentives for green building; they're expected to formally approve it later this month. We mentioned in our rockin' Smart(ish) Cities series that this was in the works -- nice to see it pursued, and heartening to see such places taking green(ish) steps.

Oh, Tampa, my smoggy traffic congested city...Now if they would just approve some kind of feasibly mass transit system to address the incredible sprawl and congestion. Oh, and if they could find a way other than un-enforced signs by the waterways to prevent speeding boats from killing manatees. And if they could get all those big houses and hotels to turn of the lights at night during those few summer months sea turtles hatch on the beaches.
But really, I am really happy about the green buildings.

The earth is our house. Let's clean it up!

A long way to go, but good effort!I have family in Florida, and while I'll agree that the public transportation in Tampa is somewhat lacking,  the city should be commended on its green building push AND education and outreach programs, which are of major importance to the overall sustainability of a city, especially in an intergenerational sense (ie classroom programs, youth interaction).
Also, even though this doesn't come from the city government, Tampa may soon be getting more energy from renewable sources, thanks to a locally-based energy co-op. This may be of some interest to you:
