Steve Irwin RIPI was very saddened by the news of Steve Irwin's death while filming a documentary. I was fortunate enough to meet the man when I visited the Australia Zoo and he was a really nice guy. I hope his enthusiasm and deep love of nature will inspire others to make this planet of ours a better place for ALL its inhabitants. May he rest in peace and my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

RIPA tragedy for his family and for the marine ecosystem he was filming.  With fossil combustion/greenhouse gas warming waters, pollution,  and overfishing killing the reefs that trap CO 2, his voice was needed to save them.
Let's hope his friends and colleagues increase their efforts as a tribute to his part of the hopeless battle to save life on spaceship earth as we know it.

    Was he a real person?

Someone in Beijing (an American) told me this last night.  I never heard of him.  When he told me who he was, my first thought was that he was a tv character, you know like Superman, Scooby Doo or George Bush.
(I mean no offense to the real man, I never heard of him and don't know him.)
Strange how much tv influences our lives.

more than television, thoughI don't know Patrick, this one isn't so strange. I haven't had cable/satellite in over fifteen years, yet I very much know of Irwin(helps that half my family lives in Australia). That is, the Croc Hunter wasn't entirely a  product of TV culture. He actually lived and worked outdoors, among and with the creatures about which he was so passionate. Some would say that he is a hero for the work he did to aid the protection of several species.
    Viva Steve Irwin!!

    Reading More

Even the Chinese Press is talking about him.  I guess I don't watch enough tv!!! (smile).
But while it sounds like he was a really good guy and very educational, I still worry about the influence of commercial television in helping decide who our role models will be. (not aimed at him).
Viva Steve Irwin!! (though I never saw him).

Irwinian aestheticsOur cable package perversely does not include the Animal Channel (just as well, perhaps), so I never actually saw Steve Irwin's program.  (Or programs?  I think he may have had more than one.)  But I certainly have seen small segments of things he did from time to time.
From what I have seen and read, one of the most valuable elements of Steve Irwin's life and career was his great love of reptiles.  And one of his most precious legacies to us all is the sense of how truly beautiful they are.  "Crikey!  What a beauty!," he would say, most sincerely, as he presented to his viewers some snake or crocodilian that perhaps most people would find rather repellent.

RIPI didn't watch his show frequently, but when I did, I was always pleased to see just how much fun he was having with his work. Still, I was extremely saddened to hear about his death. I just console myself with the thought that at least at the time, he was doing something he really loved.
