Hydrogen ho! 1

Here's a great speech from Metaldyne CEO Tim Leuliette on energy independence and what a real push for a hydrogen economy would look like (PDF) (he calls Bush's $1.2 billion Hydrogen Fuel Initiative "a token gesture"). It's a relatively good (and short) read, but if you want the cliff notes and some juicy quotes, check out the summary at Green Car Congress.  Here's a tidbit:
It's an issue we raise periodically and then put away when concerns fade from the nightly news. It's an issue we like not to talk about unless we have to. It's an issue that with one senseless act, one government collapse, one hiccup in a global distribution system, will become our worst nightmare.

The issue is the drug that our industry, our society, is hooked on...it's called oil.

Hydrogen EconomyI'm super psyched about the potential of the hydrogen economy for many reasons, such as the environmental, economical, and security reasons that Leuliette discusses in his speech.  My only concern is where we get the power to isolate the hydrogen.  If we use coal/nuclear/old school fossil fuel power to isolate it, are we just shifting the production of pollution from the automobile to the hydrogen plant?  I'm not as educated on this subject as I wish (hence this post and my quest to get educated!), but it seems like the true potential of the hydrogen economy will not come to pass until the hydrogen is "produced" using green power (i.e, wind, solar, etc), such that there is minimal pollution in the isolation and the usage of the hydrogen.  Anyone who can help clarify the nebulous entity that is my mind will be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks in advance!
