whale poop tooSam Wasser, of the University of Washington, has been training dogs to sniff for floating scat of whales, so that the stuff can be collected and analysed.  A reference to it in a recent blog entry:
    http://orcinus.blogspot.com/2008/07/tucker-dog-whale-rese ....
    Also, by Wasser himself:

He and his dogs have gone after not only orcas in the waters off Washington, but also right whales in the Bay of Fundy, as well as some endangered terrestrial mammals.
It is good work for the dogs, too, he says: they are otherwise unadoptable dogs whom he has rescued from shelters.
But these remote-control helicopters are a cool idea.  It is not surprising that the gray whales are more approachable than the blue whales.  Here on the East Coast, if whale researchers should wish to implement this new method of collecting data, it seems reasonable to expect that humpbacks and right whales would be nearly as patient as are the gray whales in the Pacific.

WhalesYou can discuss whaling directly with the whalers at my blog:

I have invited Laila from High North Alliance, a prowhaling organisation.
It may be very strange for the Americans but the Norwegian Greens promote whale meat staek as enviro friendly.
Mr Hauge , promoted by the Times magazine , as environmental hero of the environment , eats minke whale staek.
Latest news from Norway is however , that the notorious whaling boat Nybraena , has shoot her last harpoon , due too political pressure and bureacracy around whaling.
The Nybraena is famed for being in confrontations with Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd back in the 90's.

AmbergrisFund whale study with ambergris not whale meat.  Remote subs that sniff for it could observe whales.  Really study them and protect them.
I wonder if this could get sophisticated enough to warn whales away from Japanes whaling ships.  With satelite tracking of whaling fleets relayed to whale watchers who warn the whales through underwater communication.
The new show "Whale Wars" featuring a Sea Sheperd ship and crew is fascinating.  They try to interfere with Japanese "study" (wholesale slaughter) of whales.
Another idea to consider would be to warn whales away from underwater explosions used in oil exploration and submarine exersizes that employ sonar that disoriets and kills whales.
A good executive otder for Obama to start off with would be research into prevention of sonar damage to whales and other marine life.
