Red Sox partner with NRDC to green Fenway Park 5

America's national pastime is going green in Beantown as the Red Sox step up to the plate to make going to Fenway Park a whole new ball game. Under a five-year partnership with the National Resources Defense Council, the nation's oldest active ballpark may vend beer in corn-starch-based cups, serve local, organic food from concession stands, add solar panels, and even initiate a new tradition: a fifth-inning recycling stretch. Sounds like their bases are covered.

Great move, but......sadly, while this will help save the planet, it may not help- the Sox from imploding this season. let's see the Yankees go green, huh?

    (stupid Yankees! grumbles)

Fenway Park  It may be important to note that the Red Sox have a big advantage over many other major sports teams (in any sport).  Fenway Park is located in a reasonably high density residential district with very little parking, so many people walk to games, and is serviced by Boston's famous (infamous) Green Line T.  If I had to guess, and I do, I'd say about 3/4 of people arrive at the game on the T.

As indifferent to baseball as I am, it warms my heart to see the T packed to the gills every game-day.

The Green Red SocksIt's great opportunity to expose a lot of people to green options, but I do have some concerns.
Biodegradable cups packed into trash bags and tossed into the landfill with mounds of other garbage will not decompose without light and air.  Hurray if they plan to capture the biodegradable cups/plates along with the appropriate food scraps for the compost bin.
There's plenty of room for improvement in concession stand food offerings at sporting events.  As a CSA member, I'm all in favor of locally grown organic food.  I worry that it will not stand a chance next to the hot dogs, chips and junk food that will most likely still be on the menu.

pessimism anyone?Jeez... why is everyone being so negative on all fronts about this?  Can't we just appreciate that this momentous thing-- mainstream culture actually taking steps towards greening the planet-- is happening.  I mean, c'mon people, the worlds not gonna change overnight!  And the Sox are kicking ass this season, by the way!

Red Sox Power into World SeriesGreening?  We'll see. I'd love to see the new park really institutionalize a green consciousness in that great old building. It would me even prouder to be a Red Sox fan...and a Rockies fan second!
