Fancy yourself persuasive?

Record a message to the candidates about warming; win prizes 7

If you had 30 seconds on camera to convince the presidential candidates to take global warming seriously, what would you say? How would you say it? Would you sing? Use visual aides? Do it in the buff?

Why not give it a whirl? LCV is having a Hot Spot Contest, gathering 30 second videos from (above) average folk like you. The winning spot will win two tickets to the Live Earth show on 07/07/07.

If you do submit one (via YouTube), lemme know. Maybe I'll run a few here, too. Who knows, maybe a talent scout will see it and your name could go up in lights. Fluorescent lights, of course!

If I were Prime MinisterA similar campaign was done in Canada, called "If I were Prime Minister":

30 seconds to tell Canada/the world what you would do to tackle global warming if you were prime minister.
Some are kind of cute, and all are much more intelligent proposals than our current prime minister's (lack of) proposal.

My blurbI would bring up the notion of peak oil and the fact that for all our coal, we will be forced into doing something within the next generation like it or not.
Just today I was blogging about how the DOD uses so much oil they're almost proving that peak oil is right around the corner.
I'm talking fuel rations and coupons for gasoline and diesel, and the likelihood of natural gas disruptions.
If we are smart we will be prepared for those days in the future.  If we are smart we won't try to solve all our problems with coal and ethanol.  If we are smart we will diversify our energy menu to rely less on any fossil fuels.  By doing so, global warming gases could be cut quite dramatically.
Don't do this for us, but our kids.  When the founders of the United States created their vision of government, they didn't do it for them but for a legacy that would endure for generations.
    Be that way, mon.

complicated scienceTrying to reduce a complex science to a 30-second sound bite is the kind of bullshit that got us into this whole problem in the first place. It is useless. Small wonder, therefore, that Grist is pushing it. It is right up your alley--be forceful, without being intelligent. Suits you perfectly.

Great demoAnd that, class, is what the psychologists refer to as "projection."

Save the world: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 5% annually.

Projection...I used to love it when the teacher would turn off the lights and use projection!  LAUGHS
But honestly, is you testify before a regulatory body, court, of government committtee, all you have is 30 seconds to three minutes and that's it.  Pick a number, get in line, wait to be called, and be clear, succinct, and to the point.
Otherwise they'll stop you or physically throw you  out of the meeting.
Honestly, you can provide entire notebooks of information as "back-up" but nobody is going to read all that stuff.  Basically, you live or die by how well you are able to "put it on a bumper sticker."

Post-Literate Society Hasn't Arrived Just Yet

Some of us still think that text is the best way to express complicated issues.   However, maybe you can come up with ways that Chinese university students imitating Backstreet Boys can offer insights into climate modeling...

AgreedMost of you folks here are well respected engineers, and planners, so the intricately complicated science of Global Warming is a near and dear issue.
Joe Six-Pack, on the other hand, distrusts smart people and technical details.  You are never going to "convert" Joe Six-Pack by writing.  Forget it.
Until you convince the mythical Joe Six-Pack and Aunt Betty, you're not going anywhere.  Sad but true.
