Exxon rears its head and violates Alaskan airspace

Sarah Palin, polar bears, and junk science 1

There's lots of buzz around this piece in the Guardian, in which Ed Pilkington shows that Alaska governor Sarah Palin, battling to keep polar bears off the endangered species list, made use of junk science and scientists funded in part by Exxon and the American Petroleum Institute.

Those interested in the subject should read this follow-up from Greenpeace, which links to background info on ExxonSecrets and in the Anchorage Daily News.

To me this doesn't reveal anything malign about Palin in particular. It's just that she's a Republican fighting on behalf of fossil interests, and as such she makes use of the human and financial resources made available to Republicans by fossil interests. It ain't pretty, but it's not unusual either. That's how these things work.

Might be nice to hear a question about this at tomorrow's VP debate, but of course that will never happen.

Palin's anti-wolf backgroundSince this is Wolf Awareness Week, that seems as good an occasion as any to consider afresh the recent history of aerial hunting of wolves in Alaska, as presented by Defenders of Wildlife:

On the theme of Palin's rejection of science, there is linked a report by Defenders' man in Alaska on the slaughter of wolves, including a number of pups, carried out this past summer by state wildlife officials, apparently with no reckoning of professional methods and standards of "predator control."
