Dem debate in Nevada 4

Well, the Dem debate in Nevada this evening was largely an excruciating affair, thanks to the world-historical vapidity, ignorance, and pettiness of moderators Tim Russert and Brian Williams. Before you do anything else, go read Matt Yglesias' new piece, "The Unbearable Inanity of Tim Russert." It could not be more right on.

In what, as far as I can tell, was the only even mildly interesting, Grist-relevant moment in the debate, John Edwards unambiguously rejects nuclear power:

    hardball vs. curveballYes, it is funny how, instead of going to church, or doing anything else appropriate to a Sunday morning, say, sleeping, there is a class of Americans who like those political talk-shows.  And for some reason, Tim Russert's "Meet the Press" seems to receive the highest praise -- from the DC press crew.  There are many ways of conducting interviews, and I agree with Matthew Yglesias that Russert's approach does no one much good, really, save the DC press crew.
    The detail about CNN's Suzanne Malveaux, whom personally I like, is sad.  Clearly she muted an "intriguing open-ended" question, complying to the closed-minded categorization that the DC media recognize.
    The debate itself I did not see.  And it is still too early for me to run the video with John Edwards on nuclear energy.  But this seems like a fair review, from the hometown paper:

    Why in the world were there people still thinking afterwards that the race is between only Hillary and Obama, when John Edwards spoke so well?  Obama seems not to have said much of interest at all.

    Chickens are our cousins! So are fish! So are other sentient animals! Let us learn to be kind.

    Only one candidate clearly met Hansen's testUmmm, that only one of the three would unambiguously say "No new coal plants unless and until they can sequester carbon" seems mildly of interest to Grist, no?

    Save the world: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions 5% annually.

    Kucinich and GravelI was really disappointed that Kucinich and Gravel weren't there.  And Kucinich even put up a fight in court.
    The debates are pretty meaningless, especially without those two.  It's just the candidates talking about how great they are, which is rather disgusting.
