Database of sustainability communication projects 2

The United Nations Environment Program must have been listening to all the Grist chatter (here and here) about how to communicate environmental issues, because they have just launched the Creative Gallery on Sustainability Communications, described as the ...

... first international online database of corporate and public advertising campaigns specifically dedicated to sustainability issues and classified by sustainability themes.

The goal of the project is to ...

... inspire and foster more and better communication on sustainability issues from all stakeholders involved in the promotion of sustainable development.

Very cool -- it's like YouTube for enviros!

There are scads of ads in this databse (718) from all over the world. The 23 sustainability themes are broad and, in my opinion, inclusive of a range of critical issues that often get left out of sustainability discussions, such as human labor and social rights.

Grist readers will probably appreciate the humor in many of the ads.

Here's two climate change examples from NEC and from Britain's Central Office Information.

Hours and hours of funAnd what's also cool about it is that people can even submit ads as well. It's pretty interesting to see how countries create ads in support of sustainability and the environment, as well as other social issues.

Spooky coincidenceI keep seeing things around the world (especially on Gristmill) that I have just written about:

(see the bit about Environmental Awareness)
I really can't stress enough the importance of finding creative ways of engaging the public. A many-pronged attack is needed, using the law, taxes, grants, adverts, education, positive messages and community mobilisation - for without getting the people of the world to move their collective arses (as opposed to sitting back while "everyone else" does something) then it will be goodbye nice planet.
For every bad thing the UN does, there seem to be 10 good things that no-one ever mentions...
