CSM notes a slowing in the Coal Rush 4

The often-outstanding Christian Science Monitor notes a distinct reversal of fortunes (at least here in the U.S.) for The Enemy of the Human Race. The situation is so dire that a coal industry guy has had to resort to the great standby of the corporate toolbox, namely lying:

"If they don't start building coal plants, it's going to be an economic prosperity problem for the country," says Richard Storm, CEO of Storm Technologies, an Albemarle, N.C., company that specializes in optimizing coal-fired power plants. "We need coal. Coal is a national treasure."

Let’s live on the planet as if we intend to stay.

Eww coalEven if you bury coal (using carbon capture - which is what coal proponents are labeling as a "cure" for global warming) there's no indication that the captured carbon will stay put! What if there's some kind of earthquake, or other geologic event that triggers the release of all that carbon all at once! Coal is just another dirty energy source - the kind we need to get away from. Using coal is just postponing the inevitable, and also endangering future generations by leaving them to deal with any issues regarding the stored carbon.

That's my take on it anyways.

Coal Industry LiesThe coal industry lying is SOP here in Utah. Robert Murray's outrageous and insulting falsehoods during the disaster at his Crandall Canyon mine/deathtrap have led to a congressional investigation and possible criminal charges. First, he blamed the mine collapse on an "earthquake" (not true). Then denied he was engaging in retreat mining causing the collapse (lie). Murray has refused to respond to subpoenas to testify before Congress about his deceptions and responsibility for the deaths of nine people. I see no reason to believe anything Murray, Blankenship or anybody in the coal industry says.

The article also talks about natural gasLargely the kneejerk reaction to expensive coal is to go natural gas.
However natural gas is also going way up in price, not because of capital, but because of fuel costs.
And if everyone shifts to Natural Gas, then it only makes the scarcity worse.
So Natural Gas is having it's own issues as well.
