Plight of the Condor

Officials in ‘crisis mode’ as SoCal condors poisoned 1

Weeks before California's ban on lead bullets in condor habitat goes into effect, seven of the endangered birds have been found with lead poisoning. And that's no insignificant tally, as only 34 wild condors are known to live in southern California. Wildlife officials are in "crisis mode," says Jesse Grantham of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: "This is the highest lead exposure event we've had in 10 years."

CA Fish & Game To BlameWhen I worked with Earth First! in the mid '80s, we urged the California Department of Fish and Game to ban lead ammunition due to, among other things, the harm it was causing to highly endangered condors.  But because this agency is made up of hunters, our evidence fell on deaf ears, as they cried about the extra cost of stainless steel ammo.  The Legislature finally passed a bill outlawing lead ammo, but it should have been done more than 20 years earlier.
