   Highlighting faculty contributionsWould Sierra's list look the same if the contributions of faculty research were factored into the equation?  Let's face it, going green at the student  and facilities levels is necessary and important, but focusing the faculty of our nation's universities on solving environmental problems is arguably more important.  For example: we should recognize the important advances in biofuels production and their applied use in agriculture by Auburn University's faculty at the Natural Resources Management & Development Institute.  The list of research achievements in energy, water, air quality and more at Auburn and other universities is long -- but needs to be even longer. Remember, technological innovations born in university labs kick-started the Internet and altered our global future.  Now more than ever, we need the minds of faculty (and students) trained on solving the challenges of climate change and integrating the solutions into our lives.

   vaguely unfairThe University of California and Pennsylvania State University should not be treated as single entities.  Each campus has a different set of physical circumstances, and a different way of living with them.  The Ogontz campus of Penn State, in a leafy suburb north of Philadelphia, can barely manage its duck pond.
   Also, Sierra Club should emphasize not only interesting and promising innovations, but also responses to basic challenges, e.g. managing the environmental effect of residences and transportation.
