Calling all ... Marylanders?

New bill would mandate California-like carbon reductions 2

Whether you live in the Old Line State or not, this is of high interest: the "Global Warming Solutions Act," a bill that Orion Grassroots Network super group Chesapeake Climate Action Network thought could take years to pass, suddenly has a chance, thanks to recent changes in the political climate.

The bill would make Md. just the second in the U.S. -- behind California -- to mandate huge, statutory reductions in greenhouse gases by 2020. CCAN Director Mike Tidwell calls it a "radical and utterly appropriate commitment. More importantly, it encourages other states to do the same, raising pressure for strong federal legislation." Marylanders, get in touch with CCAN and with your reps!

So who's next?

Erik Hoffner is the coordinator of the Orion Grassroots Network which supports the work of hundreds of grassroots groups and which connects the green leaders of tomorrow with good work today via the Grassroots Jobsource. Based in Massachusetts, he is also a freelance photographer.

Why should I voluntarily take actions that will force industry to raise energy prices--the inevitable consequence of mandatory caps on GHGs? I'm having a hard enough time getting by already--the last thing I want is to pay more for energy. I want to pay less for energy.

Go CCAN!More great work from Mike Tidwell and CCAN!  Hopefully Maryland's action will encourage Virginia to do something -- anything -- on climate change.
